Welcome to IBIZA
Ibiza belongs to the Baleares, a group of
islands in the Mediterranean Sea, located off the east coast
of Spain. Ibiza has something in common with Samui. Tourism
was triggered by some adventurous travelers and hippies. Though
for Ibiza and the surrounding islands business started off much
earlier, somewhere in the early sixties.
The language spoken is Catalan some mixture
out of Spanish and French, originated in Catalan, the area of
Barcelona (great city), where the delicious Cava is produced,
an equivalent to the French champaign. Cava is the perfect drink
at one of the many bars at the various beaches of Ibiza. (I'd
recommend the rosé of 'Can Rafols del Caus'.)
Ibiza is only busy during high season (May
till September). In July and August it is very busy and even
though there is plenty of accomodation available, you might
be lost finding a place to stay. Clubbing weekends are organized
from the European mainland, flights, hotel, everything included
for people who want to party two days non-stop. This is what
Ibiza is associatet with: parties.
However, it's not only parties. It's great for sailing
and a good variety of watersports. In the backlands you'll find
a large fleamarket and most of the small villages have preserved
their own cultur and heritage. There are family-clubs
(de) with special programs for kids. Club
Med is there and all the others as well.
Once the season is over, Ibiza gets quiet,
really quiet. The large discotheques have closed (every
year there are 'closing parties', usually end of september)
and many of the bars and shops were closed down. This is definitly
no more party time and for the remaining inhabitants it is time
for recovering.
